Energy, Jobs & the Environment: A Global Solution

In the year 2000, 56 percent of the global middle class resided in developing countries. By 2030, that figure is expected to reach 93 percent (The Economist). The global middle class is adding 80 million people per year – resulting in a total increase of more than two billion people by 2030. (McKinsey Global Institute). The majority of this growth is occurring in development nations such as India, China, Brazil and countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Concurrently, global demand for energy is projected to increase by 36 percent between 2008 and 2035 (International Energy Agency), with the same developing nations accounting for 93 percent of this increase.

The identification of new forms of clean, non-edible, cost-effective, locally-produced energy – and specifically sustainable plant oil – is key to addressing global energy demands and job creation, while promoting economic stability and environmental sustainability.

Jatropha has been identified as an ideal solution to address this global economic and environmental challenge because it is non-edible, has high yields with low input costs and creates value from previously idle lands.

By establishing a thriving Jatropha industry, SG Biofuels is creating employment opportunities in the countryside, reducing strains resulting from urbanization as workers flock to the cities to seek employment. Jatropha provides a reliable source of high-quality oil and energy for local communities, and reduces the need to import foreign oil.

Millions of acres of land around the world have been marginalized and are not considered optimal for food production. This land has little to no value to its owners, many of whom are small farmers. Through the sustainable cultivation of Jatropha, SG Biofuels can create thousands of new jobs, establish a local source of environmentally-friendly renewable energy, and provide energy, economic and social stability to developing nations around the world.
